San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Recap

Wow! This year at Comic-Con we had an explosion of activity! From our always awesome panel to our guests signing at our booth, there was rarely a moment of quiet at Hermes Press this year...which is how we like it! Below are some of the candid (and not-so-candid) pictures of what we got up to at SDCC this year!

If you weren't able to get Mother Goth Rhymes (the limited edition) at the show, we have some copies left over for purchase on our site!

Coming soon to Hermes Press: Gladys Parker: A Life in Comics and a Passion for Fashion by Trina Robbins!

Coming soon to Hermes Press:

Gladys Parker: A Life in Comics and A Passion for Fashion

Gladys Parker: A Life in Comics and A Passion for Fashion

Hermes Press is coming to slay the fashion industry- with some HERstory! Gladys Parker: A Life in Comics and A Passion for Fashion explores the history behind Mopsy and her creator Gladys Parker! This beautiful book will also provide a rarely seen collection of Mopsy stories and many of Parker’s earlier strips.

Cartoonist Gladys Parker was unique in comics. As with Frida Kahlo, it was impossible to tell where her art left off and its creator began. Parker mixed fashion and comics and created classic characters that mimicked her sense of fashion. In fact, Parker was an exact double for her ink-and-paper creation, Mopsy.

Tarpe Mills and Dale Messick both dressed to kill and included paper dolls featuring their heroines’ chic 1940s wardrobes. Tarpe Mills and Lily Renee were fashion models before they drew comics. But only Gladys Parker (and one other)* was a fashion designer with a successful line of clothing while at the same time drawing an equally successful comic strip. Parker’s dresses bearing the Gladys Parker label were sold at her own New York shop and at high-end department stores across the country – and she also found the time to costume Hollywood movies and the beauties that starred in them!

Who better to chronicle the story of Gladys Parker than comics herstorian Trina Robbins, who in the 1960s designed clothes for hippies and rock stars out of her East Village boutique, while drawing underground comix?

Author Spotlight: Mother Goth!

Mother Goth was busy preparing for her favorite night of the year, but we managed to catch her for a few brief questions...

What's your inspirations for some of your spooky rhymes?

All my poems are autobiographical. Mary Had a Little Beast? Me. The decapitated shepherdess in Little Bo Dead? Also me. The murderous unicorn in If You’re Stabby and You Know It? In truth, Stabby was one of my dearly departed husbands, but as they say, write about what you know… or who you kill. I’ll leave it to my dear readers to determine which is which.

Who is your favorite author?
Alas, poor Edgar. How I loved him. It was my crow that finally did him in. A word to the wise—crows do not like being mistaken for ravens.

What is your favorite part of being an artist?
Tracing around the bodies.

Where do you like to create your art?
Wakes. The reference is so very good.

What music (if any?) do you like to listen to while you work on your Rhymes?
A nice upbeat requiem mass or howls of the tortured.

What's your favorite kind of bat?
The Louisville Slugger. Handy when one is fresh out of knives and arsenic.

What's your favorite part of Halloween?
The convenience of leaving the skeletons out on the lawn.

How will you be spending your Halloween?
In the cemetery, digging up a date.

Favorite spooky movie?
My home movies. Or “evidence” as the prosecuting lawyers call it.
